Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Emmit Till, Anne Frank, And So Many Others are the reason this book exists.
I got so angry in 2023 when so many Black folks were being murdered by police. It reminded me of the stories of 1940 in Germany when the police would round people up and shoot them en masse. It reminded me of Stonewall.
It reminded me of so many times when we as a society learned the police cannot be trusted, that I decided I needed to get all my thoughts, all my trauma, my story, my way, down, so that the whole world can stop asking “Why didn’t she say something?”
I started this book when I was housed. I continued to write it as we moved from one hotel to the next, and I finished it in a beautifully furnished apartment, looking over the mountains and smiling every single day because my life is fan fucking tastic.
I’ve had so many people tell me to tone down my voice, telling me that being the first openly bisexual and mixed race woman in Canada to be non-binary and talk about mental health openly is unimportant, but it means everything to me, and to girls like me.
In Canada, girls often go ignored, we often go unheard, and we often go neglected. But it doesn’t have to continue to be that way.
We as girls can tell our own stories, in so many beautiful ways and the world can’t say shit about it because if the men of this world wanted us to “behave” they should have taught us better.
Thanks to Nada Chehade, KS Hernandez, Arturo Domingez, Allison Wiltz, Savannah Worley, and so many others, I am here today to tell you that life gets better. That it becomes amazing.
I can tell you that you meet people who will understand what level you are on, and who are willing to meet you where you’re at, instead of expecting you to give more than you’re capable of.
Life when you are in bloom when you are thriving, is absolutely beautiful, and I have a brand new book to showcase that fact. I am so excited.
This book is dedicated to all the girls out there who were told they’d never make it. This book is dedicated to all the boys who were told they’d never be able to identify themselves. It’s to everyone who ever had their voice stolen by a ghoul, a dragon, or a demon. I fucking love you. WE DID IT!!!!!!!!
My new book comes out October 31st on Amazon and you can find my other books here.
Sending all my love,
Devon J Hall, The Loud Mouth Brown Girl
